Keffiyeh Guide: How to Wrap Your Head – In 6 Steps

Keffiyeh Guide | 6 Steps head wrap

The keffiyeh is a square scarf with a bold pattern and a soft drape. This keffiyeh guide shows a simple head wrap that stays put and feels comfortable. First you will fold the cloth. Then you will place it and tie it in a neat way. In a few minutes you will be ready.

What you need

  • One keffiyeh, about 120 by 120 cm
  • A mirror and a little patience

Time: 2 to 3 minutes  Difficulty: Easy

Step 1. Fold to a clean triangle

First lay the keffiyeh flat with a corner pointing toward you. Then fold the far corner down to meet the near corner. Smooth the fold so the long edge is straight. As a result the scarf becomes a neat triangle with tassels even on both sides.

Step 2. Place the fold across your forehead

Next lift the triangle and set the folded edge across your forehead. Let the long point fall over the back of your head. Keep the fold one to two fingers above your brows so you can see well. Meanwhile hold one end in each hand.

Step 3. Cross the keffiyeh ends behind your head

Crossing both ends of the keffiyeh behind the head

Now take both ends to the back of your head and cross them once. Pull gently so the fold feels snug but not tight. Because the cloth grips, a light pull is enough. Do not twist the ends yet.

Step 4. Bring the keffiyeh ends forward along your cheeks

Then bring both ends forward along your cheeks toward your chin. Keep the fold smooth across the forehead as you do this. At this point the long point still hangs over your back and the ends face forward.

Step 5. Tie or tuck for a clean hold

Tying or tucking the keffiyeh ends under the chin or near the shoulder

After that tie the ends once under your chin or just above one shoulder. A simple square knot works well. If you prefer no knot, tuck one end across the other and into the fold near your ear. In either case the wrap should feel secure and easy to breathe in.

Step 6. Adjust the drape and the view

Finally check the mirror and make small fixes. Ease the fold so it sits level. Tuck any loose fabric near the ears so the lines look clean. If wind or dust picks up, lift the front edge over the nose and mouth, then lower it again when the air is clear.

Quick keffiyeh guide tips that help

  • For a firm hold, keep the fold smooth and even before you tie.
  • For comfort, loosen the knot a little, then retighten only the outer layer.
  • For glasses, set the fold slightly higher and tuck fabric away from the frames.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pulling too hard in step three, which can cause the fold to slip later
  • Skipping the tuck in step five, which can leave the ends loose in wind
  • Setting the fold too low, which can block your view

Styling your keffiyeh

People wear the keffiyeh for comfort, for sun and wind, and also for meaning. Therefore choose a style that feels right to you and wear it with care.
